As a member of the United States Air Force's Auxiliary, the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) is entirely volunteer-run but is funded by the Air Force. CAP boasts a fleet of 560 aircraft and is responsible for 90% of all continental U.S. inland search and rescue missions as directed by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center. Every year, they save an average of 82 lives. In addition, CAP's 66,000 members carry out homeland security, disaster relief, and drug interdiction operations at the request of local, state, and federal agencies. CAP is also committed to aerospace and STEM education, with over 28,000 young people taking part in the Cadet Programs, mentored by CAP members.
